Bombshell!

January 29th 2010 21:25
The bombshell has dropped, after 9 years and 3 children later, Eleni Menegaki and Giannis Latsios are getting a divorce! I must say this is news I never expected, the couple have always put out the image of being a happy and in love couple, devoted to their 3 kids. I never expected this, but it's not rumour, it's official, the couple releasing a joint statement yesterday stating that they have decided to separate but will always remain together as parents to their children, and hoping that their decision is respected and supported.

I am still shocked, this news came out of the blue. I hope the Greek media outlets allow them the space and privacy to get on with their lives though. Such a high-profile split will be extensively covered as it has already, but what needs to be remembered is that they are people too and need to have their time to grieve, process and move forward as do all others in such situations.

Mihalis Hatzigiannis

November 15th 2009 04:43
October 17th 2009, Sydney Entertainment Centre

The BEST concert ever, it made me want more. It made me wish I had toured Australia with him and gone to the concerts in Melbourne and Adelaide too. I saw him live, one night only, in Sydney and the memories still blow me away. What a voice, what an atmosphere, what an amazing presence that man has!

The concert opened with Emeis Oi Duo San Ena to thunderous applause, the crowd loved it and spent the night singing along to Mihali's songs. I know I did! He doesn't tire, his voice carried out just as strongly at the end of the concert as it had in the beginning. He also has an ease with the crowd, often including them and making his own comments. He's blessed with an amazing voice, melodic and strong, and also an ear for music, writing most of his own music and playing the guitar and piano. I must say, I was waiting for him to pick up the guitar, which he did about mid-way through the show. It's something I was expecting and looking forward to and he didn't disappoint.

Stand out songs were Xeria Psila (the crowd went wild!) and he repeated this one several times, just the chorus, knowing the crowd love it and sing along. Others were Ola i tipota, Oneiro Zo and Horis Anapnoi, all high energy songs with great participation from the audience. The ballads were just as popular, songs like O Vythos Sou, To Party, Na Eisai Ekei and Den Feugo. Notably missing was An Mou Tilefonouses, Omorfi Mera and Na Meineis Edo. I would have loved to hear those songs live. I guess he had to make some choices though, he wouldn't be able to sing each song he's ever released obviously!

My personal favourite which I can play on repeat many times without tiring of it, Den Feugo, was the highlight of the evening for me. Shortly after he'd picked up the guitar, I heard the opening notes of this song. Hearing it live was incredible, I had no words. I was engrossed in the song and his voice.

This was one concert I did not want to end, and I have plans to try to catch his shows as many times as possible next time I visit Greece.

I will allow my fangirl side to come out just a little to say that as usual, he looked very handsome! Gorgeous actually. *faints* He came out in a black suit at the beginning, changing into jeans and a tshirt about half-way through the show. HOT! He's got the looks, the voice and he's also quite low-key, no reports of engaging in celebrity antics or having a different girlfriend every week. He's had a long-time girlfriend for about 5 years, though there are some reports of a rift between the two lately, nothing has been confirmed.

I use the words amazing and incredible often when describing Mihali and his songs but this is one singer I can truly say I am a fan of. I appreciate his music and am thankful I got to see him live in concert. Thank you Mihali and come back soon! Australia already misses you!

Movers and shakers

September 25th 2009 22:51
There is a lot of movement going on in the new season in Greece, shows have been axed, people you don't expect to see being offered a role have one and people you would expect to immediately get a new role have not been offered one while others are simply taking their time to decide on a new role.

Most shocking of all - Proinos Kafes no longer existing as part of Antenna's line-up, a show Eleni Menegaki made famous which has been continued with varying stages of success by others. Clearly not enough success as the show has not been renewed. The duo of Haritatos and Karameros will instead be doing a show in this highly competitive morning time-slot and rumours are rife as to who will be their female counterpart on the show. Will it be Manolidou, Thraskia, Boule or no one? All rumours, none substantiated. In this case, I believe the presenter who would best fit in with the style of show and this duo, would be Rania Thraskia. I may not like her but she's very smart and should fit in well. She was axed from Alter while still in the maternity ward, not a great move by the channel I think. ANT1 and MEGA are likely fighting over her now that she is no longer with Alter.

Nadia Boule is a shock to be without a position and having other much less talented presenters (if they can call themselves that) taking a role over her on MEGA must have been a blow. No matter though, she is a talented up and coming presenter, she has proven herself to be not just beautiful but smart as well and is not afraid to take a chance. I'm sure she'll be snapped up by one of the large stations, they'd be silly not to. In related news her romance with Gregory Arnaoutoglou is said to be on the rocks, well, I'll believe it when I see it though I hope not, it's about time Gregory settles down with someone and she seems a good match.

Queen of this 10am to 1pm timeslot has always been and I believe will continue to be Eleni Menegaki. She's back for her 14th year in television in this time-slot and I am sure she will continue to do it successfully. She's not complacent though, she acknowledges the competition and does her best.

Yet another baby

July 29th 2009 02:09
Well-known television presenter, Rania Thraskia, gave birth to a baby boy early on Monday morning by Cesarean and both mother and baby are doing well. Early reports suggest the baby has his mothers looks, no word on whether he took one look at his proud daddy and thought he was the grandfather. Me, mean? Never! But yes, yet another baby has entered Greek showbiz. After Niki Katsona giving birth to a boy also and newly married Kelli Kelekidou ready to pop too. Now let's hope Thraskia remembers what a 'private' person she supposedly is and doesn't start splashing him all over the magazine covers....because that would be tacky. It isn't known what name he will receive yet.

Eurovision 2009 and Greek television

March 19th 2009 10:46
Sakis Rouvas is deep in preparation to represent Greece in Eurovision 2009. He will be singing 'This is our night'....we certainly hope it is! I'm not too sure about this song, it has its catchy moments but it's not mind-blowingly brilliant. However, it's a good song and should be enough to secure Greece a good place. Sakis brought Greece home the third place with the song, 'Shake It' in 2004. Kalomoira did it again in 2008, winning third place with 'Secret Combination. What can I say, we all want that first place again but we'll see how it goes on the night. Eurovision is after all a very unpredictable competition and many of the countries also vote with a political agenda in mind. Good luck Sakis!

Drugs, DNA and Lawsuits

February 22nd 2009 06:16

Model Teo Theodoridis has been caught with drugs, yet another Greek celebrity who is a secret user. Teo is a successful model, and has stated many times that he enjoys a healthy lifestyle. Yeah, and that's why he was caught with cocaine. It's the healthy lifestyle that he tries to promote. I remember seeing him on an episode of Omorfos Kosmos to Proi, and I was just thinking, 'wow, this guy is HOT'! Actually the photo probably speaks for itself, I don't need to say it. He's likely going to be jailed for this, he allegedly had a substantial amount found on him. I guess the celeb life isn't all it's cracked up to be

A short journey through the television ratings gathered by AGB for this week does not bring too many surprises. The ratings have been compiled by the media news site, enimerosi24.gr and have been translated into English characters by me.

Ratings below, the ratings specifically for ages between 15-44 are in brackets

It seems that showbiz couples are breaking up left, right and centre at the moment in Greece. One after the other, they're dropping like flies.
