Eurovision 2008
May 24th 2008 04:20
It's that time of year again, time for Eurovision.
While it is not the most well-known event for those here in Australia, it has a huge fan base and Europe tunes in yearly to see which country becomes the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest.
The contest this year is in Belgrade and the rules have changed slightly due to two semi-finals taking place but are largely the same as they have been previously.
In the final, without going through the semi-final selection process are France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. They are known as the big four and have always had a huge involvement with Eurovision. The host country is also exempt, and this year it is Serbia. Joining them in the final are the top 9 countries from the first semi-final along with a wildcard and the top 9 countries from the second semi-final along with a wildcard.
Citizens of each country, even those not ending up in the final, vote by telephone or SMS. Votes count as 12, 10, 8 and all the way through to 1, as each country votes on its top 10 favourites. These are then tallied to determine the winner.
Of course, Eurovision also means that the most unexpected acts can end up making the cut between semi-final and final, as well as ending up as winners.
This year has been no different and with the contest being held in Belgrade, the countries getting through the first semi-final are:
Israel
Azerbaijan
Norway
Poland
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Armenia
Finland
Romania
Russia
Greece
From the second semi-final:
Iceland
Sweden
Turkey
Ukraine
Albania
Latvia
Croatia
Denmark
Georgia
Portugal
The running order for the final on 24 May 2008 is as follows:
Romania
United Kingdom
Albania
Germany
Armenia
Bosnia and Herzegovina
Israel
Finland
Croatia
Poland
Iceland
Turkey
Portugal
Latvia
Sweden
Denmark
Georgia
Ukraine
France
Azerbaijan
Greece
Spain
Serbia
Russia
Norway
Twenty-five countries all vying for one position as winner of the Eurovision Song Contest. Who will it be this year? I'll be tuning in to find out.
Actually I'll be looking up the result once the live show ends but I will still watch it when it airs here. I always go for Greece so I'll be interested to see how well Kalomoira places with 'Secret Combination'. GO GREECE! *waves flag*
